New Years 2012-2013

Onaping Falls, Ontario, Canada from iPhoneTemp on the drive home..

So for the new year, I went up north to a friends farm to bring it all in. It was a nice drive and a great time with my family. Once I got there it was unload, say hello and some good eats. There were clouds and snow the drive up, but later in the night a nice clearing came. Then I decided to hike up the hill, to their cabin which overlooks Vermilion Lake and their wonderful property, to setup the camera for a new years time lapse. At around 21 seconds, in the time lapse bottom left, you will see somebody bringing in the new years with some fireworks. While this was going on we where all inside watching the Naked Gun marathon on the tele. lol Time lapse below

Once I woke up, I went up to the cabin to get the camera. It was -25 celcius and had to kick the tripod to get it out of the snow. lol I then bundled up for another hike, this time I drove to Onaping Falls, Ontario, Canada. The hiking trails there are amazing. You walk over the falls, up the side of the Canadian Sheild to overlook and get an even nicer views of the falls. With this hike I used my Canon 70-200mm f2.8, and was very happy with the mist coming off the falls, made for some great pictures. I will be coming back to this area again because I have learned many things. I would love to get some images of “shatter cones”, which are formed from meteor impacts all over this area. Lots to learn and explore up north… Did you know Sudbury Basin, Ontario, Canada was formed from the second largest known impact crater?!?

Geminid Meteor Shower

Again out at the Torrance Barrens Dark Sky, Ontario, Canada and the Geminid meteor shower put on a brilliant display for everyone to see. I went out to the barrens around 7 pm to setup and get prepared for what was to come. Preparing for the clouds to break and I could still see Jupiter through the haze I setup knowing Gemini was rising to the east and setting in the west. I setup pointing up and in an east – southeasterly direction, getting the rise of Orion, the exit of the Pleiades “the Seven Sister/tiny dipper” and Jupiter. Once I had my camera, laptop, cables and power all ready I started to shoot. Once setup I met some great people who came out to the barrens to watch this display as well. I really enjoyed the display and would say at least 100:1 meteors where actually in frame. With a very wide radiant, the meteors where shooting all over the sky, some lasting well over several seconds. With my camera setup doing it’s thing and being in the dark sky, even the smallest meteors where quite visible. I hope you got to see the show, if not I hope you enjoy these pictures and the time lapse I have made.

This image on the top is a composite image of most of the meteors I captured in the Torrance Barrens Dark Sky.  There are over 20 meteors in this image. How many can you count?

Please remember, these pictures are reduced quality and size and for viewing purposes only. Prints and digital copies can be purchased, you just have to send me a email. Thank you very much.

Orionid Meteor Shower

Orionid Meteor Torrance barrens ontario canada wesley liikane cowboy with a cameraI was out at the Torrance Barrens Dark sky area trying to capture the beauty of the Orionid meteor shower. The night was filled with clouds rolling through the scene and making for not the most ideal conditions for stargazing. Near the early morning the fog and cloud became too thick to see much of anything. Despite my eyes seeing a couple of meteors I only managed to capture one.

On this image on the left there is the constellation of Orion (top center). Under Orions belt there is its nebula M42. The meteor is on the right center.

The first link is a time lapse from the photos I took during the Orionid meteor shower, the second is a link to a time lapse as well from Torrance Barrens, Ontario, Canada of the Milky Way. For best quality view in HD.
